What is Media Center?

A Media Center is a Home Theater Personal Computer that is running Microsoft Windows Media Center also known as MCE (Media Center Edition).

MCE provides what is known as a 10 foot interface, in other words a large screen interface that can be used on a Television, this interface then works with a remote control and or keyboard & mouse to navigate around.

A Media Center can also be known as a Digital Hub, as in that it provides you one place that can access all your digital media (live tv, recorded tv, music, movies, photos, games, internet)

The main purpose of a Media Center is to provide a Hard Drive Recorder for your Television, it is designed to be able to replace your current VCR or DVD Recorder and allow you to schedule programs to record by program names rather than specific times, you just open up your guide program, select the program you wish to record and yuou press record, Media Center will look after the rest.

Why use a Media Center?

MCE is very flexible, in fact it is just like a normal windows computer, that can have extra software installed as needed.
So that means you can add functionality to suit your individual needs. For example there is a plugin that allows you to store all your DVDs into a catalog showing cover art and descriptions, or a plugin that allows you to check your local cinema times all from your Television.
